“The Thornybush Wildlife experience compares with anything in africa”
The resident game ranger takes groups out for day and night drives. He has a wealth of information and knowledge to share while navigating bush tracks filled with unusual sightings. The many water holes are well populated with game and bird life. At sunset a safe scenic spot is located where all disembark and share the Chefs Special hamper complimented with chilled sundowners. If it is the early morning drive coffee or tea becomes the preferred beverage.
You can confidently expect to see many of the big five during your outing.
Beautifully situated in the heart of the Timbavati bushveld, the camp looks out onto the northern part of the hazy blue Drakensburg mountain range. The 35000 acres of bushveld is a finely tuned eco system of indigenous trees such as the Jacklelberry, Marula, Leadwood and Buffalo Thorn. Each bears a pedigree of impressive medicinal and ecological benefits. The reserve is home to over 300 bird and 100 mammal species including the impressive “Big Five”.
The newly built lodge epitomises elegant Colonial living with high ceilings, thatch roof and large open areas leading onto sweeping decks. Generous loungers’ invite guests to relax around the salt water rim pool. A horizon of crystal water spills endless over a look out ledge with a view of the watering hole beyond. Wild dog, jackal and hyena are some of the game that come to share sundowners with the vigilant guests. Candle lit dinners provide opportunity to watch the drama of an African sunset unfold in a panoramic sky. The warm breeze carries an alchemy of pungent smells. Burning Leadwood, potato bush, distant rain mix with the cry of the hyena to create the unique Africa experience that captivates the hearts of all.
Our rooms are designed and decorated with comfortable opulence in mind. They are generous in size with large beds and welcoming couches covered in quality linens. The added features of air conditioning, outside shower, wireless connectivity, and splash pool on your private deck provides the backdrop for a perfect bush retreat. The thatched suites are free standing and completely private. Bird song and the cicada beetle in the day and harmonising baritone and reed frogs in the evening are the only sounds that are constant. Nothing has been spared in creating the perfect environment in which to unwind and reconnect with nature.
“River Lodge is more than a venue….it is an experience waiting to add value to the soul and spirit of any discerning traveler.”
“You cannot live well if you haven’t dined well”
Our chefs pay special attention to the latest trends in food preparation. Their kitchen is filled with the freshest ingredients, complimented by herbs grown on site. They produce four course meals nightly that reward the most seasoned pallet. We believe in the saying that you cannot live or love well till you have dined well. The hearty breakfast is also worth leaving the crisp cotton sheets for.
